Hurling Fever in Cloonlyon

It has been a busy few days for the pupils of Cloonlyon NS with a 3rd and 4th Class hurling blitz held in Ballaghaderreen and also joined forces with Tavrane NS to partake in the first ever "Vincent Judge Memorial Tournament" hosted in Tooreen Hurling Club.

On Monday 19th June the boys and girls of 3rd and 4th Class traveled to Ballaghaderreen to take part in a mixed Blitz. We were very lucky to be able to field two teams as the interest to participate has been so high. This was a great day out with each team getting to play 4 games each. This was a tournament to introduce pupils to the game of hurling and to develop further the skills which some of our pupils are beginning to master. It as a great day out where participation was the focus and enjoyment a key factor to build interest. 

On Tuesday 20th June some of the boys and girls from 4th to 6th class joined the pupils of Tavrane NS for the first inaugural "Vincent Judge Memorial Tournament" held in Tooreen Hurling Club. This was a great opportunity for some of our pupils who do not play with a hurling club to get a feel for the pace of a full 13-a-side game.

We were blessed with glorious weather for the occasion and the pupils had the joy of wearing the Mayo County Jerseys. with a mixture of boys and girls from both schools  we took on Aughamore in our first match loosing by four points with a final scoreline of 4-5 to 4-1 and then went on to play Ballyhaunis in the shield final, who were quite strong for our mixed team. 

With over 80 children taking part it was a fantastic day and one that hopefully we will be able to participate in again in the coming years. A massive thanks has to go to Adrian Hessian who organised the event and ensures children participate and enjoy hurling and Camogie. 

The children were also lucky enough to be presented with their own sliotar from Mayo Senior Team forward Fergal Boland on the day.
