This showed them how the animals in polar regions cope with the cold icy conditions all year round.
This week for science we completed a scientific experiment about animals in polar climates. We wanted to find out how animals in these regions stay warm - they don't wear warm coats and woolly hats like us! We found out that these animals have a layer of blubber or fat under their skin which keeps them warm in the icy cold water and from the cold winds. We used a cooler full of ice and a plastic bag that was filled with cooking fat (to represent the blubber) to test if this really does help with the cold. ![]() Children wore a latex glove so not as to get too cold from the ice and water. Placing their hand into the cooler we noted how quickly our hands started to get cold from the icy conditions. Once everyone had a turn at this, it was time to test the blubber! ![]() We used cooking fat to represent the blubber and by placing this into a plastic bag we were able to make a pocket to place out hands in. When we placed this into the ice the children noted how it took much longer to feel the cold if at all. This showed them how the animals in polar regions cope with the cold icy conditions all year round.

As the children of the middle room have been looking at civilisations in South, Central and North America, for art this week the children produced dream catchers which were created by the native american people.
The children from 2nd to 6th class ready to set off on their last trip to Claremorris where we have been attending swimming lessons for the past 6 weeks. A fantastic skill for children to acquire and one which they can carry with them all their life. Thanks again to Claremorris Swimming Pool staff for their hard work this term.
Pictured are the middle room with their flower creations which they made during Friday's art lesson. The children have been working with pencil, pastel and chalk to create beautiful flower themed artworks over the past number of weeks. By using the skills acquired over the past month, the children then produced some of their own flower creations.
Continuing with our work on comprehension and reading in the middle room today the children worked on their new Literacy Box comprehension activities, to promote their comprehension skills across the curriculum. Another fantastic resource to add to the collection.
