Sporting Activities
St. Patrick's National School Cloonlyon has a long and proud tradition of excellence in sports with recent successes in Spikeball, Gaeilc Football, Hurling and Futsal. Physical Education, Gaelic Football, Hurling, Futsal, Soccer, Handball, Rounders, Tag Rugby and Spikeball all take place in the school. We have a large assembly hall for physical education with a well-stocked supply of sports equipment ranging from beanbags to tennis rackets to an indoor/outdoor soccer nets. This hall is also suitable for staging school events.
The school avails of outside coaches, providing the children with a chance to sample, develop and enhance their skills and talents in a variety of sports. Children are organised into smaller groups so as to gain the most from these sessions. The school has two yards where students enjoy free play time during their breaks. We have an outdoor basketball and a pitch area with two goals, where children can play a variety of sports.
The School Sports Day is organised by the school staff with the help of our parents. This is a yearly event which is usually run in June.
Where necessary we use the facilities in the community such as the community centre and nearby sports grounds. The Claremorris Swimming Pool is within driving distance of St. Patrick's National School, Cloonlyon, and the children participate in swimming lessons, from 2nd class to 6th, usually running for 5 weeks after Mid-term.
