Congratulations to the newly appointed Amber Flag committee. The committee have been busy establishing their goals for the year to help our school promote positive mental health. The committee hope to build on the success of the last number of years.  Some of the highlights to date include the ‘I Am’ campaign where all pupils in the school displayed a positive affirmation about themselves, the establishment of an Amber Flag notice board, a poster campaign promoting positive mental health, a mental health awareness themed entry into St. Patrick’s Day parade, partaking in the Mayo Mental Health Association art competition and fund raising through the Peace Package with a donation of E50 to Pieta House.
The committee hope to promote the three main goals of the Amber Flag which are:
  • To promote mental health and well-being for all.
  • To prevent mental health problems through increased awareness.
  • To improve the quality of life for those with mental health
problems by promoting recovery through awareness and education.
The committee look forward to steering the pupils of Cloonlyon towards our 3rd Amber Flag and welcome support, comments and suggestions from all the pupils.

We are very excited to announce that we are embarking on a new adventure.  Following on from the success of the Green Flag and Active Schools Flag Initiatives we are now taking on the challenge of obtaining our first Amber Flag.

Ministers Jan O’Sullivan and Kathleen Lynch jointly launched Well-Being in Primary Schools Guidelines for Mental Health Promotion. This is the result of a joint collaboration between the Department of Education and Skills and the Health Service Executive with the aim of promoting mental health and well-being in primary schools.

It is recognised in these guidelines that positive mental health and well-being enables young people to lead fulfilling lives. Home and family are recognised as the primary source of nurturing and support for children.  However, mental health and well-being are recognised as everyones concern and involves the whole school community, parents/guardians and others involved in day to day school life.  Positive mental health for children is part of their overall health and is inextricably linked with well-being.

In order to promote positive mental health and well-being we have decide to take part in the Amber Flag Initiative.  This involves the whole school community coming together in order to create a safe, positive, and healthy attitude towards our general physical and mental health and well-being.

In order to roll out all the activities involved we have formed an Amber Flag Committee.  The committee members:
Lucca, Dean, Keli-Marie, Paddy, Paddy-Joe, Abby, Dennis and James .
