Pupils in Mrs Michael's room have had great fun over the past couple of weeks listening to the classic children's story Owl Babies by Martin Waddell. It's all about three little baby owls who are left on their own while their mother is out hunting. They are scared and need to keep each other company until mummy returns. Check out the beautiful owls babies created by the pupils using paper plates, cotton wool, skill and hard work. They used brown paper to make the trunk and branches of the tree and cut out stars from gold paper to create a perfect night-time scene. Well done everyone!

Pupils in Mr McGuire's room have been very busy creating some wonderful autumn artwork. They began by tracing the outline of their hands and arms on a sheet of paper to form the trunks and branches of two trees. The pupils then had great fun painting on autumn leaves using only their thumb prints. The results were amazing and bring a fantastic splash of autumn colour to the corridor. Well done to all the artists in 2nd, 3rd and 4th class!
On Friday, September 22nd we had our second Green and Red day, this time to show our support for the Mayo ladies who take on Dublin in the All Ireland football final on Sunday in Croke Park. A large number of pupils are going to the game and we hope you all have a brilliant time and see Mayo lift the cup on Sunday. Best of luck to the Mayo team and we hope to see you back at home on Monday with the Brendan Martin cup! C'MON MAYO!!! Today 19th September marks the 130th anniversary of the opening of Cloonlyon National School in 1887. The school was built in 1886-7 at a cost of £800 to accommodate up to 300 pupils. On the site there were separate boys and girls schools, each with its own Principal.
On the opening day there were 183 pupils on roll, although just 106 attended. The school building remained almost the same throughout the years as in the picture below, which was taken in the 1940's. The door at the front is the entrance to the boys school. The girls school was accessed on the graveyard side through the existing porch door. There was a dividing wall at the rear of the school which would still have existed at the time of this photograph. On Friday September 15th we had our green and red day in preparation for Sunday's big match. Pupils and staff made a huge effort to cover themselves in green and red (there was even a tiny bit of blue on show!) Our Mayo flag and green and red bunting are flying proudly outside the school and the pupils were busy during the week decorating walls and windows in the Mayo colours. We had a fantastic sing song at assembly with everyone singing along to the three newly composed verses of the Sawdoctors classic Green and Red of Mayo penned by our own pupils. We hope that everyone enjoys the match on Sunday and that we get the right result with a Mayo victory. Best of luck to local hero Tom Parsons and all the Mayo team and we hope to see you back in Mayo on Monday with Sam! |
