Borehole Number 3 - The Mayo Pump
Over the last few years Noeline Haylett has been a frequent visitor to Cloonlyon NS. She has, over that time, raised our Green Schools Flag and brought a variety of animals  for children to engage with and learn about. In addition she has  entertained and amazed the children with some fantastic, real life jaw-dropping stories.
On her most recent visit in April 2017 she brought two hedgehogs. Before leaving she asked if the pupils might have a raffle to support the drilling of boreholes in Ghana – a country with which she has had a long association lasting over 20 years. Boreholes cost in the region of €4,000. The current fundraising has been for a project she has appropriately named Borehole Number 3 - The Mayo Pump.

It is normal for the senior children to do some fundraising during their ‘Confirmation Year’. For many years the aim was to send a goat to Africa with Bóthar. This happened many times. In February 2017 the Confirmation class  raised over €700 to support the children in Vesnova Childrens Aylum. Never afraid of a new challenge or a call for help, this years Easter egg and Teddy raffle raised €230 which has been sent to Noeline to go towards her latest Mayo borehole project. Today, 23rd May, we went to the Mc William Hotel, Claremorris for the J.E.P. project. When we got there I was a  bit nervous because I was speaking in the presentations.We each got a lanyard. Each school got a stall to sell their product and show it off.
We all looked at everyone's stall for a few minutes. Then the presentations began. Fast forward about an hour and it was lunch. To my surprise there was a cooked meal. It was delicious.
When we had finished Andy, Donal and Brendan from the Mayo team were there. I got Donal and Andy's  signature. We were the last to give our presentation. Here we go! It was our turn for the Powerpoint and it all went well.I thought it was a very enjoyable day.
On the day we gave keychains to the Mayo lads.We also posed with them and the tree. When I gave my speech I was a little nervous to move the Powerpoint but I remembered and it was ok.

​The Food Dudes Healthy Eating programme is currently running in the school. It involves the provision of a wide range of fruit and vegetables every day to encourage the pupils to eat more fruit and vegetables on a daily basis.

Pupils in the junior and middle rooms have been participating in Phase 1 of the programme for the past 8 days and have eaten grapes and carrots, bananas and peppers, oranges and cucumbers, apples and mangetout. Pupils in the senior room are beginning phase 1 today.

By eating their daily portions of fruit and vegetables pupils earn rewards such as stickers, pedometers, pencils, cups and drinking bottles. Pupils in the junior and middle rooms are reminded to continue to fill in their daily diary at home and bring them back to school on the last day of phase one.

Phase 1 ends on Wednesday May 24th for all classes. On this day each pupil will receive a special surprise that will help them participate in Phase 2 which begins the next day.

​During Phase 2 pupils are encouraged to bring fruit and vegetables from home as part of their lunch. Certificates can be earned by individual pupils during phase 2. Any rewards missed during phase 1 can also be earned during phase 2. There is no end date for phase 2 and it will continue in the school indefinitely.
