Exploring Food and Texture – Jelly Time!

19/1/2026

The Junior Room had lots of fun this week as we explored different types of food and learned all about texture. As part of our lesson, the children got the chance to try something very exciting — jelly!

Before tasting, we talked about how food can feel different. The children used lovely describing words such as soft, wobbly, smooth, and cold to explain what the jelly felt like. Everyone enjoyed watching it wobble and jiggle before giving it a taste!

This activity helped the children learn that foods can look, feel, and taste different, and that texture is an important part of how we describe food. There were lots of smiles, funny faces, and great conversations as everyone shared their thoughts.

It was a fun, hands-on way to learn — and a very tasty one too! 😄🍮

Exploring Magnetism in the Junior Room

19/1/2026

The Junior Room have been busy scientists this week as they explored magnetism during our science lesson. The children were excited to find out how magnets work and what objects magnets can and cannot attract.

First, we went on a magnet hunt around the classroom. The children tested different objects to see if they were magnetic. There was lots of excitement as they discovered that some items stuck to the magnets while others did not. The children learned that magnets attract certain materials, such as metal, but not everything.

Next, it was time to get creative! The children used their new knowledge to make magnetic cars. They had great fun testing their cars, moving them with magnets, and watching how the magnets pulled the cars along. 🚗🧲

This hands-on lesson was full of curiosity, fun, and learning. The children asked great questions, made predictions, and enjoyed discovering that science is all around us — even in our classroom!

Autumn Adventures with Our Maths Eyes

The Junior Room have been learning all about Autumn — one of the most colourful and exciting seasons of the year! To help us explore the world around us, we put on our ‘Maths Eyes’ and went on a nature walk around our school grounds.

Using our Maths Eyes means looking carefully at the world to spot shapes, patterns, numbers, and sizes — all the maths that’s hidden in everyday things! The children were fantastic detectives as they looked closely at what was changing around them in nature.

We noticed the changing colours of the leaves, from green to yellow, orange, and red. 🍁 We also found mushrooms growing in the grass, spotted bright berries on bushes, and even compared the height and width of different trees. Some were tall and narrow, while others were short and wide — perfect for discussing longer, shorter, taller, and wider.

The children used great mathematical language and observation skills throughout the walk, chatting about what they could see and comparing what they found. It was a lovely way to link our Maths and SESE learning, while enjoying the crisp autumn air.

We finished by collecting some colourful leaves and natural materials to use in our classroom for art and sorting activities. Everyone agreed that maths really is all around us — especially in nature! 🍂🌳✨

Learning About the Work of a Farmer

Learning About the Work of a Farmer 🚜🐔🌾

The Junior Room had a wonderful time learning all about the work of a farmer through the much-loved story of The Little Red Hen. This classic tale helped us explore how food is produced and how important teamwork and helping others can be.

During Aistear and station play, the children got creative in many different ways. At one station, they designed and built their very own farms, thinking carefully about what animals, buildings, and machinery a farmer might need. They also learned about farm animals and their young, matching mothers and babies and talking about how farmers care for them.

In art, the children made their own Little Red Hens using collage materials, creating bright and textured feathers. They then painted colourful backgrounds for their hens, showing fields, barns, and sunshine.

At the puppet station, the story was brought to life as the children retold The Little Red Hen using puppets and their own voices. It was wonderful to see them sequencing the story and using lots of new vocabulary.

And of course, no farm would be complete without some tractors! 🚜 The children enjoyed imaginative play using their ‘tractors’ to deliver hay to the cattle, just like real farmers at work.

This topic was full of fun, creativity, and learning — helping the children understand where our food comes from and how hard farmers work every day. A big well done to all our little farmers and hens! 🐥🌾
