Northern Lights Art – Printing, Colour, and Creativity!

24/11/2025

Last week in art, the children from 1st to 6th Class explored a magical mix of colour, texture, and printing as they created their very own Northern Lights scenes.

The lesson began with the children experimenting with printing techniques. Using coloured paints, black card, and pieces of plastic, they learned how to drag and blend the colours to mimic the glowing movement of the Aurora Borealis. It was wonderful to see each child experimenting with different shapes and strokes to make their lights shine across the sky.

Once the colourful backgrounds were complete, the children added white paint to gently create stars twinkling across the night sky. When everything had dried, it was time for the final touch — a silhouette scene of their choice. Some chose forests, mountains or animals, while others designed cityscapes or imaginative shapes.

Placing the silhouettes over their Northern Lights backgrounds created stunning contrast and truly mesmerising artwork. Each piece is unique, expressive, and full of personality — and our classroom walls are now glowing with beautiful scenes inspired by nature.

A fantastic blend of creativity, colour, and new art skills — well done to all our talented young artists! 🌌✨🎨

Exploring Colour in the Junior Room!

6/10/2025

The Junior Room have been busy little artists this week, exploring colour in a fun and creative way! Our focus was on the primary colours blue and yellow, and what happens when we mix them.

The children began by looking around their classroom and school grounds to find blue and yellow objects in the world around them. Once they had explored the two colours, it was time for some colour mixing magic! When the children mixed blue and yellow paint, they discovered a brand-new colour: green! 🌿

There was great excitement as everyone experimented with different amounts of blue and yellow to make light greens, dark greens, and everything in between.

This was a hands-on, sensory activity that helped the children learn about colour in a meaningful and enjoyable way. Our classroom is now full of bright green artwork and very proud young artists! 💚🎨

Monochrome Magic – Exploring Colour and Tone in Watercolours

6/10/2025

In last week’s art lesson, our pupils took on an exciting new challenge, a monochrome watercolour painting! This activity encouraged the children to put all the skills they’ve been learning into practice, focusing on blending, layering, and shading.

The children in 4th to 6th Class were set a tricky task: to work mainly with yellow, gradually adding small amounts of red to create rich golden and orange-yellow tones. It took great care and patience to achieve smooth transitions between shades, and the results were stunning!

Meanwhile, the children in 1st to 3rd Class got creative with red watercolours, experimenting with how much they could blend and soften the paint to create interesting textures and effects.

This lesson helped everyone to see just how much variety and depth can be created using only one or two colours. The pupils showed fantastic focus, creativity, and control of their brushes.

Our classroom displays are now glowing with these warm, autumn-inspired works of art, proof that with just a little colour and a lot of imagination, you can create something truly beautiful.

Wonderful Watercolours – Autumn Scarecrow Art

6/10/2025

Our budding artists from 1st to 6th Class have been busy exploring watercolour painting this month, and the results are simply beautiful!

The children have been learning all about how to use watercolours effectively, discovering how to build up colours in layers, add gentle shading, and blend tones together to create depth and texture. These are tricky techniques that take patience and care, but the pupils really rose to the challenge.

To put their new skills into practice, the children created stunning autumn scarecrow paintings. Each piece is full of warm autumn colours, golds, reds, and browns, showing great creativity and individuality. It was lovely to see everyone experimenting, problem-solving, and expressing themselves through art.

Our classroom walls are now filled with these cheerful scarecrows, bringing an autumn glow to our school.

🍁🎨 Well done to all our talented artists for their wonderful work and growing confidence with watercolours! 🎨🍁

Excitement is brewing as our talented Art Committee continues to breathe new life into the shelter at Cloonlyon NS through their mesmerising mural project. Over the past few weeks, our dedicated artists have been hard at work, transforming the once blank canvas into a vibrant tapestry of Irish culture and heritage.

From Blank Canvas to Blank Slate: The journey began with the meticulous preparation of the shelter walls, as the Art Committee cleared out clutter and applied a pristine base coat of white. With the canvas primed and ready, the stage was set for creativity to flourish.

Sketches of Saints and Swashbucklers: This week, our talented artists have begun to breathe life into the mural with their intricate sketches. Two iconic Irish saints have emerged on the walls, their serene visages capturing the essence of Ireland's spiritual heritage. Additionally, a legendary female Irish pirate has made her mark, adding a dash of adventure and intrigue to the scene.

Can You Guess the Names?: As we unveil these captivating characters, we invite you to guess the names of the Irish saints and the famous female pirate. Their stories are woven into the fabric of Irish history and mythology, and their presence on our shelter mural pays homage to their enduring legacy.

More to Come: But the journey doesn't end here! Our Art Committee has ambitious plans to populate the mural with even more characters from Irish mythology, each adding their own unique flavour to the tapestry of our shelter. So stay tuned for more updates as our mural continues to evolve and enchant.

Unlocking the Magic: As the mural takes shape, we invite you to follow along on our artistic journey and witness the transformation of our shelter into a vibrant celebration of Irish culture and heritage. Together, let's embrace the beauty and wonder of art as we weave new stories and memories within the walls of Cloonlyon NS.
